Top 5 Communication Apps Performance in South Africa, Q1 2023

In the first quarter of 2023, the top 5 communication apps in South Africa—WhatsApp Messenger, Opera Mini: Fast Web Browser, Snapchat, WhatsApp Business, and MoyaApp—showed varied performance trends across downloads, revenue, and active users.

WhatsApp Messenger saw a significant increase in weekly downloads, starting at approximately 49K in late December and reaching around 128K by the end of March. The app also maintained a high level of active users, fluctuating around the 19M mark throughout the quarter. Weekly revenue remained flat at $0 until the last week of March, when it saw a small uptick to $43.

Opera Mini: Fast Web Browser experienced steady weekly downloads, peaking at about 51K in mid-March. Active users for the browser hovered around 1M, showing a slight increase towards the end of the quarter.

Snapchat showed growth in both downloads and active users. Weekly downloads increased from around 37K in late December to nearly 49K by the end of March. Active users also grew, starting at approximately 3M and rising to around 3.3M. Revenue trends for Snapchat were relatively stable, with a notable peak at $659 in mid-March.

WhatsApp Business saw its weekly downloads rise from about 26K at the end of December to nearly 60K by the end of March. Active users also increased, starting at approximately 624K and reaching around 697K by the end of the quarter.

MoyaApp had a varied performance in weekly downloads, starting at around 20K and peaking at about 36K in late February before dropping to approximately 26K by the end of March. Active users remained relatively stable, fluctuating around the 160K mark throughout the quarter.
